13 basic rules to maintain high level of intimate hygiene

Women often talks and share experiences and tips about skin care, hair care, lip care and using make up, but rarely a topic of conversion is the most important one i.e. care of the intimate part “VAGINA”.


Maintaining hygiene in the intimate area is of top most important for woman, not just to feel cleaner & cooler, but to avoid unpleasant and sometimes dangerous health problems that may arise.

Here are the basic rules to maintain impeccable hygiene down there:

1.Ordinary soaps, shampoos and shower gels are not suitable for washing the vagina: most soaps and detergent based products are designed to maintain the natural pH value of the skin, which is 5.5. However the normal pH value of a healthy vagina ranges from 3.8 to 4.5. Using ordinary soaps & other bathing products can disrupt the natural vaginal flora, thereby enabling the smooth development & multiplication of harmful bacteria. It might result in infection, itching, pain, unpleasant odour, abdominal discharge or irritation. So you should be very careful when buying products for intimate hygiene. 

Many gynaecologist advice using hot water but if you feel that it is not enough, use only products designed to take care of intimate zone. Feminine hygiene products are available now a day in the market but you should always consider buying 100% natural intimate washes. Other contains harmful chemicals which make the matter worse. So read the ingredients on the pack before making a decision. 

2.Wash only the exterior of the vagina: The vagina has the ability to clean itself, so it is not necessary to wash vaginal from inside. Washing from inside can be harmful. That means you should wash your vulva, the vaginal lips and the area around clitoris

3.Wash your vagina once daily: At least once a day wash the intimate part with lukewarm water. It is recommended to wash your vagina after every emptying of the bowel (defection) to prevent transmission of bacteria into vagina. It is suggested that you should wash the vaginal area with natural intimate wash during morning showers & before going to sleep

4.Do not use sponge or gloves: Sponges or gloves can cause minor injuries to the soft and delicate skin of the vagina. You must wash the intimate part by using your hands only

5.Do not point the running water directly to the vagina: Let the water run down from the top to prevent entry of the bacteria inside.

6.Always use a soft drying cloth: You should always use a soft and dry towel after washing. Change it every 2-3 days and ensure that no one else usage your towel or you are not using anyone else towel

7.Wipe from front to back: After visiting the toilet, wipe with toilet paper from front to back i.e. starting from the vagina towards the anus.

8.Wear cotton underwear: Cotton clothing allows skin to breathe. Unlike cotton, synthetic material prevents the circulation of the air & increases the humidity in the intimate zone and thus creates an ideal environment for the growth of bacteria. Wear everyday cotton underwear and save your lace panties for that special dinner. Also avoid wearing tight jeans and pants.

9.Avoid wearing underwear during sleep: You should always avoid wearing your underwear before you go to sleep. Instead you should wear a boxer or a loose fit garment.

10.Wash your intimate part before & after sexual intercourse: It is very important that your partner maintain a good intimate hygiene too. So it is suggested that both you and your partner washes your intimate parts before & after love making.

11.Sex During menstruation carries an increased risk of infections: Avoid sex during your periods. If you are prone to infections, wait for your menstrual bleeding to get over.

12.During the periods switch the sanitary pads every 2 to 4 hours: You should not let yourself to stay with the same pad for more than 4 hours. In such cases, not only you will feel uncomfortable, but you will give the rights for the harmful bacteria to multiply.

13.Use tampons less often and change them every 2-3 hours: If you use tampons, you should not sleep with them inside. The tampons should be changed regularly because they may cause infection or toxic shock syndrome, which is considered a potentially fatal disease. Do not use tampons if you have infection.
